I picked up an '84 650 Nighthawk for parts some time ago but before
cannabalizing it I thought I would see if it would run. It had been sitting
outside for perhaps 15 years or more before I got it. So, I did the usual
things with particular detail to the carbs. Two diaphragms were tattered on
the edges, blah, blah, etc. etc. Without a motorcycle battery I just hooked it
up to a car battery. The thing ran and eventually smoothed out to one of the
nicest sounding 650's I have ever heard and the acceleration on the stand is
great. Engine is quiet, no knocking or cam noise. I kept it going long enough
to synch the carbs. But when I put a voltmeter across the battery it only
edged up to about 12.38 v from 12.25v. The starter motor I think is bad since
It took me a while to get it to turn over and then it turned over real slow.
The second time it took some turning of the rear wheel in gear and taps on the
starter motor for it to start.
Having said all that, anyone know whether the apparent charging problem could
be due to using a car battery or a bad starter motor? I don't want to hear
that it's the charging system! Graham
