Hello all,
I've been riding for over 35 years, owned everything from a Harley to a
Aprilia RSV Mille. (and everything in between)
Recently I was feeling a lil nostalgic and decided to search for a
Nighthawk S, red/white/blue.
But none to be found in decent cond. or at least in my price range, so I
decided on a blue 1985 and bought it 2 weeks age.
It's it very good cond., 30k miles.
Any way, after getting it home, tearing it down to clean and inspect (I'm
anal like that), I have made a list of things to
repair/replace. (and it begins)
Tires, valve cover gasket, and as I'm finding out, 2 very common issues
with the Nighthawks (drum roll please)..........
a funky fuel gauge
(fill the tank & go about 50 miles and it drops about 1/2 full & another 10
miles goes to empty when it's not empty).
And the infamous gear shift indicator not working.
Now, I researched both of these last 2 issues online and decided to tackle
the gear indicator 1st
I'll get to the gas gauge/tank float when I do the V.cover gasket).

So I took the gear indicator switch off, found the "T" part intact, but the
pin holding the "drum" was broken.
Oh, you and I both knew it wouldn't be that easy.
So I fixed the "drum" and put hings back together. Now I have the neutral
light working at least. But after hours of testing,
dissembles and assemles, dozens of gear shifts, etc......... the neutral
light works when it wants to and the gear indicator
in the dash will not read any gear it's in. Back to the web to look for a
switch.
And all this brings me to you folks, the experts. I can't find one any
where to save my soul.
So, if someone can point this NH newbie in the right direction to find a
gear indicator switch for my 85 NH "S",
I would forever be in your debt. If someone here has a box of spare parts
and has one, I would gladly pay for it and
the shipping to get it here. Please and thank you, Mark in Maine.
(Man that's a lot of typing for a hunt and peck typist)
