Forgetting to go from run to off will not drain the battery. Leaving the key in the wrong position will, though, if like my 650. Since it was running, the stator makes sense, but as said above, charge tha battery. If that "fixes" it, then get into a dark garage or at night and start it and rev it over 3k RPMs. If the light does not get brighter, then more evidence to not charging. Best to put a meter on it, but I'm talking quick and dirty. Stopping and starting sounds more like fuel delivery/carb issues. Is there an inline fuel filter? If so, make sure the in tank filter is still there and get rid of the inline. While there, check the in tank filter for obstructions.
