The salt flats are west of Salt Lake City, right on the border of Utah/Nevada. It is only a couple hours out of SLC. If you've never been there I would recommend it. There were some smaller roads the go north from there to connect back (eventually) to Ontario, OR. Those roads are quite desolate but very neat. Anyone is able to just drive out on the salt and putz around.
