I went through this with a craigslist  bike I bought a few years back. 
Cables around the neck had worn off two numbers of the serial, but I later 
realized it was stamped into the frame on the other side of the the neck 
from the plate. It was a 1981, the year they switched to the longer VIN, 
and even though I entered the VIN into that website and told me what the 
bike was and all from deciphering the VIN (which satisfied me), the police 
wouldn't accept it. Frustrated the crap out of me, as it made me think I 
had bought a parts bike when I saw it as a flip. As it turned out, I was 
able to get the police top accept the shorter VIN that was stamped on the 
engine. This is what it had originally been registered under.

Regardless of the story above, that Nighthawk is drop dead gorgeous. If 
you'll take $200, I'll drive up and get it. Double your money! What do you 
say?
