I once bought a $200 craigslist bike and the wiring was really wacky on it.
I didn't know where to start. I talked to a guy at a shop and he said "you
can pay me $90/hr to sort it out or you could just buy a new wiring harness
off eBay and be done with it." I bought a wiring harness off eBay for $30
and slopped it on. Voila, problems were solved. That price included the
starter solenoid, too. I guess I didn't get all the experiential learning
that I would have gotten with a multimeter in hand, but I didn't add any
gray hairs, either.

That said, I shorted out a starter solenoid and made a bike go black this
summer myself. Although it took me a while to realize that's what I had
done, a $7 starter solenoid from eBay brought it back to life. YMMV
