Not having great mechanical skills myself, I'd connect an accessory cord to the battery, connect an automotive 12 volt adapter to the accessory cord, and use a regular volt meter like those that will insert into a car's cigarette lighter. If you want a voltmeter that will mount to your handlebar, you might connect it directly to the battery.
