I've taken Ol' Yeller into Canada 3 times in the past 2 years. The first time, when I was crossing from Washington state into British Columbia, I got to the booth and handed my passport to the agent, and she said, "Who's this?" I had brought my daughter's passport! But I always carry a photocopy of my passport in my wallet when I travel, so she accepted that! (She said she would make a special exception.) Nobody cares about vehicles.
About the insurance, I'd never thought about it. Maybe I wasn't covered. Lately I've been reading about taking bikes into Mexico. You can still get into the border area with no passport check at all, but they say that once you get in to the 14-mile checkpoint, you now need to show proof of insurance. I drove a Buick to Veracruz back in the 70's, and I don't think we insured it at all. I continue to contemplate my motorcycle trip to Patagonia.
