I suspect the bearings are as old as the bike. I managed to pound them out. 
Oddly, I didn't have a sensible tool to do it. Tried a screwdriver and a 
chisel. I ended up using an old ratchet handle. The end was pretty flat and 
because it was round, I think it bit the edge of the bearing better. When I got 
them out, they had no visible damage at all! Not going to reuse them though 
anyway 👍
