I just saw an ad for a Nighthawk on CL last night. The guy said "Tach doesn't work but that's normal for these bikes."
Mine still works OK, so I haven't fixed one personally, but I once googled this problem. I found a tutorial on which connection to solder. It is inside the tach. My headlight used to go out because of a touchy connection in the right handlebar pod. I soldered it once, and it worked for 3 days.
