All four stems on my 91 NH 750 are cracked. Like you I don't want to buy new ones. My homemade solution was to get 2 or 3 nails the same length as the stem and wrap black electrical tape around them against the stem to provide stiffness and support. I first tried to repair the cracks with silicone caulk but it wasn't stiff enough.
