I had this same bike and couldn't get it on the center stand.  A friend of 
min who's also a rider watched what I was doing and explained the "trick" 
and then it was easy.

Push the stand down with your foot and make sure both feat are on the 
ground.  I know that sounds obvious but that's the problem 90% of the 
time.  You push the stand down and rock the bike side to side and you'll 
feel when both feat are on the ground.  Maybe have your wife watch you and 
coach you on the legs.  On my 750 it feels like the bike is going to fall 
over away from me when both feet are on the ground.

When you are ready to try lifting the bike push down with your foot on the 
stand and pull more back than up with you hand on the frame.
