does it have the stock air fitler and cover? i recently had this issue on a
700SC ...previous owner put a k and n filter in it and left off the original
intake snorkel. it was a dog in midrange and off throttle until warm. put
the snorkel on by chance one day, and made a huge difference....just a thought
that maybe it could be something simple like that.....

I recently bought a 1984 nighthawk 650 as my first bike and have been pretty
happy with it but it does have one issue that is pretty annoying and keeping me
from riding it much. The issue is that the bike is sluggish in response to the
throttle and has no power above about 80km per hour. It runs well warms up like
it should, runs without choke, and is a tolerable ride at lower speeds but will
not maintain highway speeds no matter what I do. I can get it up to 100 km/hr
(60mph) on flat ground but cant maintain it in any gear. Sitting in neutral the
engine will rev up to 8000 easily but under load it wont top 6000 and seems to
have no power. Going from half throttle to full throttle doesn't seem to have
any effect at all under load. I had the mechanic at the local Honda dealership
where I bought it take it for a ride and he suggested it may be a case of
cracked diaphragms in the carbs. does that sound right to you fellow nighthawk
riders? has anyone else had a similar issue and if so how did you solve it?
aside from carburetor issues is there anything else that would cause these
symptoms? The bike has 47000 km (aprox 29000 miles) on it if that
matters.Really hoping someone can help me track down and fix this as I would
love to be able to get this bike out on the road.
