Just to give you a data point: I'm completely new to motorcycle riding and
picked up a 650SC upon recommendation from a friend. Eventually I am going
to hand it to our daughter, who is also new to the game. She lives 70 miles
from us and I wanted a machine that is safe enough for her to take on the
freeway. I'm pretty comfortable with the weight of the 650 and think the
daughter will also be able to handle it. I don't think I want her on the
freeway with something that weighs considerably less.

That said, I dropped the bike today. Lost footing on the sidewalk where I
park it at work on a metal cover. It was rain slick, and I just couldn't
prevent the bike from going down. Broke the clutch handle. No additional
damage (other than to my pride!). No problem getting her back up. Lesson
learned.
