I can tell you that on a PC800, which does self-cancel, it is located in the "neck" of the frame above the front wheel so that it can turn with the handlebars to sense the direction of the bike. It works in conjunction with a speed sensor behind the speedometer pod so that it doesn't turn off at red lights when the bike is stopped.
