I had a similar problem that I fixed by changing the diode on the wiring harness. On a 1984 V30 Magna, it was a little plug-in unit under the seat. Take a look at the wiring harness diagram for your bike on Partzilla or similar and see if you can't locate it. Then use the part number to search the Internet.
