I absolutely agree with you, that overevangelizing is annoying and brings much 
harm, both in the way you described and just shifting accents. But, on the 
other extreme, absolute sobriety would result in no community; already 
established languages, like C, can afford it. Well, look what other languages' 
communities do and what glues them together. Say, searching web for "holy war" 
will probably give more results on programming language disputes than on 
crusades.  People didn't change from those centuries - our battlefields changed.
