As for your comment, though, I don't think it is duplicating lines. I extracted the file and compared the output (adding an echo statement to the code) and they are the exact same. The behavior you're describing seems weird though and it is probably a bug in the code somewhere. @cblake that is quite the improvement. Nice! Using the gzip utility is probably a wise choice in general due to optimizations it probably has. Your cligen utility/library is also super useful.
