I don't really disagree. I only really use it for patches/diffs, myself. I 
think the real issue is just the the wild inconsistency of both how to adjust 
tab-size settings and whether it is even possible across a wide universe of 
text rendering situations. Avoidance lets you bypass that complexity from the 
"abstractness" of how much space a TAB represents, but of course, you do lose 
the abstractness, too.
