Raymond,

Raymond,

I may be getting out of my league here, but Ill try to answer your questions.

NW provides two methods for adding graphics to a document, via the
clipboard of by importing graphics created by other programs.

The clipboard method involves copying the graphic to the clipboard and
pasting it into your NW document from the clipboard. This method adds a
copy of the graphic to your NW document and increases the file size of
your document by the size of the graphic file pasted into your document.

The import method bypasses the clipboard. In Nisus Writer 6.0.3 you can
read about it under the Help menu by selecting Nisus Writer Help and
typing To import a PICT, EPSF, TIFF or MacPaint 2.0 graphic. The
import procedures are clear, but the technical import process is not explained.

My guess is that the import process works like an alias. That is, NW
creates a place holder and adds it to your NW document. The place holder
describes the path to the graphic file located outside your NW document.
The file size of your NW document increases only slightly, by the size
of the place holder rather than by the size of the graphic file. Even
so, the place holder links the graphic file to your NW document so you
can see the graphic when the document is open and it prints as an
element of your NW document.

If I am correct (and I wish someone more knowledgeable would step in
here) NWs import method is particularly advantageous for long documents
with many graphic illustrations. Thats because it keeps the size of an
NW document small so that scrolling and editing text arent slowed down
as they would be were all the graphics integral to the NW document.

On the other hand, if an imported graphic file linked by a place holder
to the NW document is deleted or moved, the link wont work because the
path it describes points to a file that no longer exists or because it
points to a place where the graphic file is not located.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Bill
