IBM unveils 2.5GHz Power PC
[MacUser] 10:10

IBM has unveiled a prototype of its next-generation Blade server,
running on a Power PC chip at between 1.8 and 2.5GHz.

The Power PC Blade is based on IBM's new 64-bit Power 4 architecture.
Speculation that Apple will adopt this technology in the future has been

widespread over the past few months and it is predicted to form the
core of G5 Macs.

Currently Apple uses Motorola chips in its G4 Macs, with IBM providing
G3 processors. However Motorola's speeds have slipped further and
further behind as Intel has pushed Windows PCs beyond 3GHz. Apple's
fastest machine currently runs on two 1.42GHz processors and
although the company has made a strong case that processor speed
alone cannot determine how fast a computer really works, that
argument does not appear to have been won.

Rumours persist that there is little love lost between Apple and
Motorola,
despite a relationship that goes back 20 years. Friction between the two

companies dates back to 1997 when Apple cancelled the Mac clones
programme just as Motorola was preparing to release the fastest Mac
yet.

Blade servers are space-efficient, rack-mounted systems.
