This is an excellent structure idea, of an Express for us more general users who really can't stand Word among other things, and then addable modules for specific needs.

I think the new software's title indicates that there will eventually be an NW version for OS X and the Express version will be the lean and mean model without lots of bells and whistles.
That makes sense because NW Express's reduced feature set may be all many folks need and can be competitively priced in the current market while users with more sophisticated requirements will be willing to pay more for a more robust feature set. As a matter of fact, it may be possible for Nisus to use a modular (plug-in) design that would enable users to purchase one or more add-ons that provide exactly the enhancements they need.
In any event, I hope Nisus will include Unicode support in future releases.
