Some of the reports on OS X 10.3 (Panther) have suggested that it will include the ability to create text styles by combining various formatting options into a user-defined set. This may explain why Nisus has apparently not devoted much effort on providing a styles feature for Nisus Writer Express. However, this may be a mistake.
Even if styles can created using Panther's improved text handling, these styles need to be able survive the transition to other applications/ platforms. This means that any user defined styles should appear in the list of styles, and (preferably) its definition should be editable by other users if the application supports styles. If Apple's way of providing text styles does not do this, then Nisus should ensure that Nisus X/Express can. Like Robert, the absence of "real" styles is a deal breaker, and I will not be rushing to upgrade to to NW Express. However, I will probably do so eventually just to encourage Nisus to continue its development. At Thu, Jun 26, 2003, the nimble fingers of Robert B. Waltz typed the following: >I also consider this a necessary feature. Editors *have to* have >it. And kludges won't do; just a macro to assign all these >features is insufficient. They must be an actual editable >entity. This is because I am an editor, and I get many articles >from contributors with garbage formatting, and I have to conform >them to my appearance guidelines. Only style sheets -- exportable >style sheets -- make this possible. For me, the absence of >style sheets is a dealbreaker. I can't even serious *test* >NEx, because I can't use the results for anything. -- Mark Smith Ashiya, Hyogo, Japan.
