Hi -

I am BBE 6.0/6.5 user and still hesitate to upgrade to BBE 7.0 -
because with 7.0 I can enter/save Unicode, but how to open???

It must be me - I guess - but this way BBE 7.0 is useless to me!

Any help with it?
Herbert

Dear Herbert;

Thank you for the additional information and the screen shots. We now understand the issue that you are encountering.

Beginning with version 7, BBEdit gained the ability to handle direct Unicode input, but it still can only render things that are part of the traditional Macintosh script systems that are supported on Macintosh OS X, including Roman, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, and Central European.

Thus, BBEdit is not able to render most of the glyphs that you are working with. Especially with glyphs that have diacritical marks, BBEdit's text engine will require considerable re-working to be able to work with Unicode.

Although BBEdit can not render all the characters, you can enter and work with Unicode characters using BBEdit 7. Depending on the purpose of the file, it can then be previewed to make sure the characters are correct - such as in a browser if the files are HTML (using the Markup -> Preview or Preview With menus). This does make BBEdit's HTML and Search/Replace features available for some users who are only occasionally using glyphs that are outside the encoding range of traditional script systems.

However, after having viewed your web site, this workaround will probably not be feasible for you. As your web site features many Unicode character tables that demonstrate character sets that are not in the traditional Macintosh script system, you will probably need to continue to use an editor which is designed to work with the new Unicode handling on Macintosh OS X - such as TextEdit.

We are aware of this problem, and are researching ways to add Unicode rendering to BBEdit. We are already using Unicode internally and when interacting with OS X, but adding Unicode rendering at the user interface will require an extensive re-working of BBEdit's internals, tools, and plug-ins.

Unfortunately, we're not able to speculate when or if this might be available in a commercial release.

I hope this has helped to answer your questions.

Thank you again for your continued support of BBEdit, and hopefully in the future we will be able to provide a product which meets your needs.

Please do not hesitate to write if you have any other questions or if we can be of any other assistance.

Regards,

Ciaran.
