Greetings to all NWEx users,
Gordon Worley has written some macros and placed them at VersionTracker. They include
Making an outline in NWEx; Indenting and Outdenting items on the outline;
adding/removing tabs for selected lines.
To download, you will need to Option+Click on the download link.
One of the macros included with NWEx is for Quoting paragraphs; it puts " at start and
end. Unfortunately this is not the same as Quoting text in an email - adding > at the
start of each line or paragraph. I know nothing about Perl but it must be a simple way
of converting this text macro to an email-useful macro. Can anyone help here please?

Another problem which arises is that there is a change in the way that OS X handles
the carriage-return/line-feed, or is this a Windows thing? I could never quite work it
out, but OS X now uses a *New Line* character which is easier to understand.
These changes have a real consequence when trying to edit OS 9 Nisus and OS X NWEx
documents.
One of the great items in classic NW was the ability to remove double Returns, called
Remove Blank Lines. In NW you could display the invisible characters; you cannot do
this in NWEx. That is really bad news, frankly.
There used to be a prepared macro for this. Now it is necessary to do a Find/Replace
in NWEx but first you need to determine the format of the invisible character at the
end on a paragraph because it depends on the text properties of the source document.
I eventually found out that I needed to check for this and then put in a visible
character. So here is one way.
When in Classic NW, the Return character is like [or Option 7] and can be displayed
by one of the preferences or pop-up menus at the bottom of a page.
But, with your working document opened by NWEx you cannot display this character.
To view it, you first need to know whether the document is still in Classic format
with Return characters [\r] or whether it has been converted to RTF with New Line
characters [\n].
Open the Find dialog and type in the Find field \r; click Find All. You will probably
get just a Beep indicating that there are no Return characters as in Classic NW.
Changing the Find field to \n will search for New Line locations.
Under Where, select Entire File, or whatever you like.
Under Using, select Powerfind.
Clicking on Find All gives a list of the places in the Results field where the
invisible New Line character should be but, obviously, you cannot see them yet.
Clicking on a line in the Results field will scroll to and highlight the real location
but the true position will be invisible.
If you are happy with the results, type \n in the Replace field. Click Replace or
Replace All.
Now when you check the Find/Replace window, the Results field shows each New Line by a
[Option-7] character in the centre of the line item; blank lines are shown by having
adjacent characters [Option-7s] together _on the same line_.
Don't forget to Save each combination for future use by clicking the Powerfind Browser
icon and going to the Recent Find Expressions and Recent Replace Expressions. Each
selection can be Saved to the Saved Expressions frame.
The document I am using as an example to write this, was originally created in
AppleWorks 6 by another person. I used it to illustrate how much better it would have
been to have used Nisus Writer 6.5 and this involved creating Styles with different
colours and fonts and font sizes. Having now opened it in NWEx, all my NW formatting
is still there and it is most intriguing to see the appearance of the paragraph
marker, .
The marker always has exactly the properties of the last text character of a
paragraph; font, font size, colour, dotted-underline if the last character belonged to
a word being marked for spell checking.
Having now shown where blank lines exist, use the Saved Expressions to get rid of
unwanted Returns. For example, Find \n\n and Replace with \n to remove Blank lines.
Then delete all characters to clean up.

In most of the Macros which have been supplied, it is stated that applying them over
several paragraphs will detroy all formatting. The above method does not do this so
far as I can see.
Unfortunately NWEx does not provide nearly enough alternatives for using Find/Replace
as mentioned by Rick Gordon in a recent listing.
Hopefully someone much more experienced than I am could develop this much further.
Now to see if a similar method could be applied to Quote email paragraphs. Which is
where I started from. (:
