Sorry for the terrible delay in this, but thank you very much for the idea. Must try and get hold of NW 6.5. I've only got 6.01!!!

Can anyone suggest a fix for this weird bug? My thesis (in phonology - how the sound systems of languages are organised) contains perhaps 5000 single words shown in phonetics - conventionally in either slashes or square brackets, according to the usage, in Mac the Linguist, a font I have had since 1989 I think.
The bug is that when the text is printed, Mac the Linguist compresses itself
by about 15 percent, leading to a gap on the right between the rightmost
character in phonetics and whatever is used to close the entry, either a
square bracket or a slash.
Mac the Linguist has its own set of conventions of combination key strokes
for diacritics and characters with no alaphabetic equivalent. Other fonts
probably adopt a different set of conventions. To match my standard 12 point
Palatino the Mac the Linguist entries have to be set to 10 point and bold.
Mac the Linguist seems to have disappeared. It doesn't seem to System X compliant.
Does anyone know of a way of programming a replacement by another phonetics font throughout the whole document?

There is obviously a problem with the font metrics. I actually wrote "phont" there and then changed it. Pretty useful slip, hey, given the subject.
As Darrell pointed out, SIL will have an up to date replace, and at a useful price.
In NW Classic 6.5 you might be able to kludge a work-around by setting the font to Style > More Styles > E x t e n d, but if the font metrics are shot, then it is likely that will definitely be a kludge.
Still, worth a try.
