Some time ago - maybe a year or so - someone on one of the lists asked how to convert a Lotus AmiWordPro / Lotus WordPro file... And I answered that this was impossible to do directly. And converting through MLP is quite as impossible....
Well, The other day I got the same question on our Danish Mac group, and of course answered the same. But the questionaire then asked, if it was possible to make a work-around. this we discussed a lot and we infact came to a solution, which works nearly perfect.
Converting LWP files with text only isn't that hard, - just make the author of the file save into either RTF, WordPerfect 7.x or Word 2000 for Windows, - then at least Nisus Writer 6.x can open it witout problems, - yes, that we already knew... If it is an older version of LWP then use WordPerfect 5.1 for Windows to save to.
The 'real' problem is, when a LWP file contains graphics and / or tables. Just saving into RTF will make the tables real 'wolapyk' - or just a messof letters and numbers. Grahpics in LWP can be saved as JPG/JPEG, so this isn't a problem.
There are two ways of doing this....
1. Save the text alone with marks, where tables / graphics should be inserted. Now save each table as tab separated text with a mark where to be inserted into text. Graphics must be saved as JPG. This method will result in a single text file and a lot of tab-separated text files and JPG files.... Huh.... lots of work, but it will work perfectly correct.
2. Make the author save the file into Word 97 for Windows, - get hold of a friend with a MSO2000 and let him open the file in Word 2000 and now save it again into Word 2000 format _or_ RTF. Now you can open the RTF file directly in Nisus Writer 6.x or convert it into NW using MLP.
The only problem is that some of the tables might be somewhat out of order, - but the tables are there, so it is just correcting fonts, sizes and maybe styles and again line up the raws in the tables. Et woila - you have done the impossible�!
- Of course you can do the trick yourself, if you have VirtualPC with Word 97 (if LWP can't save into Word 2000) and 2000 yourself....
