Just because it is underfoot, don’t underestimate your floor’s
potential to make a style statement. Whether it’s an old stilted floor
or a marble floor, one can always add elements to it to make it look
impressive. Add rugs, paint your floor or simply add in a little bit of
colour by inserting few tiles in between. "Beautifying your flooring
with various elements can make all the impact even if the flooring
itself has taken a toll over the years," says Abhishek Saraf, CEO,
Squarefoot. Not many people realise that if your floor accessories are
well-selected and functional, they are representational of yourself and
give visitors a marvelous look into you and your taste.

Combination of mosaic and wood Rs 265 - 1200 per sq ft; Italian
marble with metallic border Rs 185 - 750 per sq ft

Mix ‘n’ match
A combination of two or more
kinds of flooring is the order of the day. "Italian marble flooring
combined with wood at the corners and at the centre gives your living
room the much needed breathing space," states designer Anu Khatwani.
Designer Ashutosh Somani seconds her, "One can also combine Italian or
Spanish tiles with a metallic finish at the border." For the metallic
finish, the tiles can be custom-made or one can paint the floor with
that colour. "Diamond and square-shaped small tiles in just the centre
of the room or the corridor look classy and give your room a vibrant
look," feels Khatwani.

            Marble
Inlay Rs 500 - 10,000 per sq ft; Wooden inlay Rs 150 onwards per sq ft;
(depending on the material & intricacy of the work)

Dig ‘em
Inlay is a decorative technique of
inserting pieces of coloured materials into depressions in a base
object to form patterns or pictures. "It is cumbersome; so opt for it
only in the prominent spaces of your home. “The inlay should be done
with marble for those who are willing to spend a fortune,” says
Khatwani. Natural stone works well and gives a softer look. “But wood
inlay is cheaper and is easy maintenance,” opines Somani. The inlay in
the centre should be combined with bordered flooring at the side.

Rugs and dhurries Rs 250 - 10,000 (available at leading home stores
in the city)

The rugged look
Although ethnic big-sized
carpets are outdated now, one can always experiment a little. "Combine
carpets with Swarovski crystals and place it in the most visible space
of your room," opines Somani, who also advises on using a lot of rugs
and dhurries which are the cheapest options available in the market.
"For the minimalistic look, always combine a self-coloured rug with an
off-white flooring," says Khatwani. "Add to it standing lamps, large
urns and vases. This will complete the look of your home," confirms
Saraf.

Paint and stenciling Rs 45 -125 per sq ft

Same-same but different
Painting your
floor with various designs is also an interesting option although high
maintenance. “It can get a little cumbersome for the Indian climate,"
feels Somani. But a painted design can revive a worn, old-wood floor.
For those who don't trust their artistic skills, stencils are a
foolproof way to achieve a personalised painted design. For the
festival season one can opt for a big handi with floating flowers.
"Although you cannot have it all year through, it is ideal for the
season,” states Khatwani.
