Thanks for your help. The question "do you perhaps use something like NFS"
pointed in the right direction. I had a shared folder on my Windows disk,
which I opened under Ubuntu. But running 'make' there created this error.
Simply copying it to a normal Ubuntu directory like /home/abc and then
running 'make' solved the problem.

This error message ("Setuid/gid is writable by world") is very weird. I
have no
idea why aterm-helper.pl would be setuid. The fact that it's
world-writable is
probably caused by tar, which nowadays for some strange reason creates
directories world-writable when run as root. "chmod -R go-w nix-...."
should
fix this.
As Armijn pointed out, it's better to use the latest unstable release
(http://nix.cs.uu.nl/dist/nix/nix-0.11pre8825/).
