Are you planning to build and upload an updated ISO "soonish"?
There is a new ISO now:
http://nix.cs.uu.nl/dist/nix/nixos-0.1pre10563/
which includes usb_storage and a bunch of other modules in the initrd. Could
you let me know if this solves the problem?
