Of course that would be possible. But why? To avoid two lines that do provide interesting information (this file can be autoupdated and the updated files will be verified) to anyone looking into the file. If I add extra code for gnu packages I'll also have to add extra code for all mayor other sources of packages. That kind of spoils the idea of having one mechanism that can work for everything.
