Nope, there's nothing complicated. I was just responding to a patch that Bryce proposed, by saying that manually modprobing isn't a nice thing to do, exactly for the reason you mention. It's not needed anyway, as we have boot.kernelModules and boot.initrd.kernelModules for that. As for the option you propose, I think just looking at the fsType option in the filesystems array is just as easy.
