This post (German) says that 30 previous employees started this fork: http://www.heise.de/open/meldung/Fork-soll-Mandriva-retten-Update-1081897.html I fear all the overhead (duplicate wiki, duplicate mailinglist, duplicate hydra, ...) In the end everything is open source - so projects can pick ideas from each other .. so you're right there is not that much to worry about in the end.
