I managed to solve the problem by creating more locales in configuration.nix.
> $ cat /etc/nixos/configuration.nix | grep supportedLocales > supportedLocales = [ "de_DE/ISO-8859-1" "de_DE@euro/ISO-8859-15" > "de_DE.UTF-8/UTF-8" "en_US/ISO-8859-1" "en_US.UTF-8/UTF-8" ]; I am suspecting that having the de_DE/ISO-8859-1 locale along with a ISO-8859-1 font encoding in XTerm solves this issue. However, I switched to a 8859-15 and probably the de_DE@euro/ISO-8859-15 helps here. But I am only guessing.
