I usually try to run the program first, because if it is available in the channel nix will print the package name: $ xsltproc The program ‘xsltproc’ is currently not installed. You can install it by typing: nix-env -i libxslt But some packages aren't available in the channel (if their expressions lack meta.platforms). So if the above fails I do what Mathijs says and grep for it in the nixpkgs tree.
