Yes.

If so, I'm still seeing them on my Hydra web interface with Nix 1.8.
Is this intentional? Is there any documentation describing their
purpose? (Hardly important, but I'm a curious fellow.)

The purpose is to allow for hierarchical folding of the logs, e.g. see http://hydra.nixos.org/build/11861073/log

Maybe the change doesn't apply to hydra's raw/tail log output (I guess that's where you saw the sequences).
