The reason I made so many mistakes was that I was following the Nix manual
rather than the NixOS manual. Why would I do that? The table of contents for
the NixOS manual doesn't mention channels (the channel stuff is in the
chapter titled "Upgrading NixOS"), and I had forgotten where I read about
channels, so I turned to the Nix manual. D'oh!
