As to the dist-packages: You are right, a successful installation
using `sudo make install` writes the files
to/usr/local/lib/python2.6/dist-packages.

Thanks Sebastian, good to hear that it is working.

Your report was helpful in any case because it made me notice the inflexibility of the Guile plug-in installation, which will be fixed in the next release, as well as prompting me to get a better understanding of the Python installation path.
