As some of you know, Saif and I participated in Senseval-3. This is an international competition between word sense disambiguation systems. (More info about this event is available at http://www.senseval.org) The actual evaluation period took place in March, but we have just finished the papers describing our systems. These papers will be included in the proceedings of the Senseval workshop that will take place in Barcelona this summer (which I will not be attending, but perhaps Saif will be a bit luckier than me. :)
Saif entered his SyntaLex system, which is based on his MS thesis work of last year. I entered my old Senseval-2 system, plus the unsupervised SenseRelate system that Sid and Bano have both worked on. I am happy to report that Saif's system won in the mini-competition between us. :) Saif's system takes advantage of syntactic and lexical features, while my supervised systems only use lexical features. This adds further support to Saif's thesis work (and the subject of the recent CoNLL paper) that syntactic and lexical features are complimentary and not redundant, at least to an extent. This is a very interesting question I think, and I hope that our respective sets of results will lead to interesting post- Senseval-3 evaluations.
