We spend lots of time thinking about conferences to submit papers to, and that's a good thing. Conferences are great venues to present things we are doing now and late-breaking developments, and they give us a chance to go present our work in front of other folks, and get immediate (and personal) feecback.
It's also important to remember that there are journals out there that also publish work. Usually work in a journal is a bit more mature than that which appears in a conference paper, and there is no "event" that you must attend in order to present the work. A journal is basically a magazine that is sent to folks who happen to be interested in a particular area. When would you submit an article to a journal? Probably not before your M.S. thesis is complete, and the journal article would be a fairly complete and up to date summary of what you did in your thesis... In any case, if you are ever thinking about sending your work to a journal, there are quite a few that are directly relevant to the work we do. What follows is a very incomplete collection of titles and urls... The following are focuses on natural language processing and computational linguistics... Computational Linguistics (the most prestigious journal in NLP) http://mitpress.mit.edu/journal-home.tcl?issn=08912017 Journal of Natural Language Engineering (more applied focus) http://uk.cambridge.org/journals/nle Computer Speech and Language (mostly speech, but with some nlp coverage) http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/journal/08852308 Transations on Speech and Language Processing (very new) http://www.acm.org/tslp/ Computers and the Humanities (recently renamed to something else, focus shifting to language resources and their use, such as WordNet, corpora, etc.) http://www.kluweronline.com/issn/0010-4817/contents Then we have some more general AI journals that might be interested in some of the work we do. There are many other AI journals actually, so this is meant only to a partial list. Journal of AI research (high-quality online journal that includes nlp) http://www.jair.org/ Journal of Machine Learning Research (new, not much nlp so far) http://www.ai.mit.edu/projects/jmlr/ And then in areas like Medical Informatics you find journals that publish increasing amounts of work about NLP - I don't actually know much about either of these, I just know that I've seen NLP work in both...
