The class project in CS 8761 (Natural Language Processing) this semester was automated essay scoring. Each team was to produce an essay grading system that would take 5 paragraph essays as input, and score them based on 4 criteria - gibberish detection, relevance of response to question/prompt, identifying statements of fact, and checking accuracy of facts. Clearly this doesn't include all the elements necessary to grade essays, but given the time constraints of a semester long class we needed to focus on just a few significant details. The systems use a variety of methods, and all of them are quite interesting, so I'd certainly encourage you to check these out. The code is available for download, and there are web interfaces up and running for all systems. Please let me know if you try these out, and also feel free to communicate with the teams directly.
