I think the best way to see what's happening, though, is to install the
"live headers" sidebar in Firefox: it will show you exactly what
Google's "Suggestion Server" is saying as you type.

Actually I've found that that extension has improved my understanding
of how HTTP works as well. 

The general concensus among most of the blogs I've read is that the key
presses are being compared to some sort of data structure that contains
popular searches.
