On Thursday Jan 27 we had our first group meeting. You can find the slides from the presentations posted to the group page:

I normally convert slides to pdf, but wasn't able to do that today since I'm working on a machine without Adobe Distiller. So you will find a mix of ppt, pdf, and sxi (open office) formats Let me know if you have any trouble with any of these, and I'll convert these to pdf in the near future to make them more portable. Our next meeting will be on Thursday, Feb 10. At that meeting Apurva will present her thesis proposal, and get into some specifics about how we will adapt the methods of Rada, et. al. and Hirst & St-Onge for measuring relatedness to UMLS. She will also discuss the Graph module in Perl, and explain how we have been using that. It's an interesting module, and you can see more about it at http://search.cpan.org/dist/Graph After that our next meeting will be on Thursday, Feb 24, and at that meeting I've asked Anagha to lead us in a discussion of the following paper: McCarthy, D., Koeling, R., Weeds, J. and Carroll, J. (2004) Finding predominant senses in untagged text. In Proceedings of the 42nd Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics. Barclona, Spain. pp 280-287 http://acl.ldc.upenn.edu/acl2004/main/pdf/95_pdf_2-col.pdf We should all read this paper prior to the meeting on Feb 24, and come prepared to discuss. This paper won the ACL best paper award in 2004, so it should be interesting. :) Then after that we'll have a visit by Serguei Pakhomov on Monday March 7. Our schedules are very busy on Mondays (classes, etc.) so we may not have a group meeting, but I will arrange individual meetings as appropriate, and Serguei will also give a talk. I'm leaning to having the talk from noon to 1:20pm, but that is not official yet. Thereafter, our next group meeting will be Thursday March 17. More about that as it gets a bit closer.
