This is a very useful summary regarding the statistics classes offered at
UMD. I know that all of my current students have taken their out of
department classes already, so I am simply posting this for future
generations, and your information.

Some CS grad students have enquired about the ANOVA class (STAT 5411).
I suggested that they talk to their advisors in deciding if the ANOVA
class is really what fits their needs best. The catalog descriptions
and prerequisites are instructive. To put things in further
perspective, here is some brief info about what distinguishes the
graduate level STAT classes.

-  Stat 5531 studies probability models pertinent to CS students.  Many
CS grad students have taken this class over the years.  Offered every
spring.

-  Stat 5571 (Probability) and Stat 5572 (Statistical Inference) are
really a single class (from a single textbook)  that would often be
called Mathematical Statistics.  The probability in 5571 is the
probability tools needed for in depth study of statistics.  Offered
every fall (5571), spring (5572).

- Stat 5531, 5571 and 5572 are math centered courses much like other
math courses.

- Stat 5411 (ANOVA), Stat 5511 (Regression) and Stat 5515
(Multivariate) are applied courses involving analysis of data.

- Stat 5411 involves design and analysis of experiments looking at how
factors affect an output.  The class is taken largely by
biological/medical science students and our own majors.  For example
one might investigate how allergic responses are affected by age of
sensitization or sex. Stat 5411 is the least mathematical of the 5000
level classes.  This can be a disadvantage for foreign students who are
more accustomed to math courses than analysis of data.  The student
should have seen basic statistical concepts such as confidence
intervals and t-tests.  Computing software:  SAS.  Offered every fall.

-  Stat 5511 is a standard multiple regression class with matrix
algebra and data analysis components.  Computing software:  SAS.
Offered every spring.

-  Stat 5515 studies aspects such as clustering, principal components,
discriminant analysis,  and crossvalidation. This is the most
mathematical of the 5000 level courses involving matrix algebra such as
singular value decomposition, but the focus of the course is
applications.  For graduate students either 5411, 5515 or equivalent is
a sufficient prerequisite.  Computing:  SAS and R/Splus.  Offered odd
falls, including the current semester.
