I have been very pleased to learn that three (!) papers by three different former UMD students will appear at EMNLP this year. EMNLP is always a fiercely competetive event, and the quality is excellent, so Amruta, Sid and Saif are to be heartily congratulated!!

This reads like a list of some of the people I admire most in the field: Diane Litman, Graeme Hirst, Ellen Riloff and Jan Wiebe. I *really* regret that I will not be at EMNLP.
