I have been very pleased to learn that three (!) papers by three
different former UMD students will appear at EMNLP this year. EMNLP is
always a fiercely competetive event, and the quality is excellent, so
Amruta, Sid and Saif are to be heartily congratulated!!

I would really encourage everyone to read over these papers, and to let
the authors know if you have any comments or observations.

"Humor: Prosody Analysis and Automatic Recognition for F * R * I * E * N * D *
S *",
Amruta Purandare and Diane Litman
http://www.cs.pitt.edu/~amruta/pubs/2006/emnlp06.pdf

"Distributional measures of concept-distance: A task-oriented evaluation",
Saif Mohammad and Graeme Hirst
http://www.cs.toronto.edu/~smm/WebDocs/ConceptDistance.pdf

"Feature Subsumption for Opinion Analysis"
Ellen Riloff, Siddharth Patwardhan, and Jan Wiebe
http://www.cs.utah.edu/~sidd/papers/RiloffPW06.pdf

All of these will appear in the Proceedings of the Conference on Empirical
Methods in Natural Language Processing (EMNLP), July 22-23, 2006, Sydney,
Australia. http://www-nlp.stanford.edu/emnlp06/

I should also mention that I am very impressed with the co-authors Amruta,
Sid and Saif have on these papers. This reads like a list of some of the
people I admire most in the field: Diane Litman, Graeme Hirst, Ellen
Riloff and Jan Wiebe.

I *really* regret that I will not be at EMNLP. But, the important thing is
that Sid, Saif and Amruta will be there!!

Keep up the good work, and congratulations!
Ted
