As of Aug 22 ITSS has said that they will allow google and other bots to crawl our personal UMD web pages. They have adjusted
http://www.d.umn.edu/robots.txt accordingly, although until I actually see that Google has crawled my site I am not quite willing to believe we are back to normal. Let's see what happens in the next few days. You can verify that Google has crawled your site using tools found at http://www.google.com/webmasters Among the nice tools available there are those that create and make available a sitemap, that will help Google index you. I have created a sitemap and put it at : http://www.d.umn.edu/~tpederse/sitemap.xml Among the other really neat things you can see at this webmasters site are the queries that led to people finding your page. That's pretty interesting, and might be useful in terms of tailoring your sites to get mor hits (once we are indexed again :) Finally, if you are tired of all this, a student told me that you can create pretty respectable web pages via the Google page manager. Just go to http://pages.google.com and you can get started. I have my own very primative page set up: http://tpederse.googlepages.com If things ever get really bad at UMD, maybe I'll just dump some of my stuff over at googlepages. :) I'll keep you posted, but do pay attention to your sites, and make sure they are getting crawled sometime in the next few days.
