The author of the paper that plagiarized from our IJCAI 2003 paper wrote
back and indicated that they were sorry for their mistake, and asked if it
would be acceptable to publish the paper with that portion "fixed".
Of course they miss the point.
Suppose you go to a restaurant and they bring you a plate of spaghetti
with a cockroach in it. You complain, and they say "oh, well we'll just
pick that cockroach out of there" which they do and then they give the
plate back to you and expect you to be happy with that.
Me? Well, I would not trust the spaghetti on that plate, and I wouldn't
trust anything else coming out of that kitchen.
My response to their proposal follows. The lesson my friends is simple,
don't get yourself in a position where you are getting email like this.

I am afraid I must continue to ask that the paper be withdrawn. The
verbatim copying of several paragraphs worth of text reveals a flawed
methodology in writing this paper, and suggests that the paper itself
should not be trusted.
The important question is this : is this the only part of the paper
where such a "mistake" exists? Given the large and obvious amount of
copying that exists in and around equation 14, I think it's very likely
that similar "mistakes" were made in other parts of the paper.
I hope you understand that this really isn't just a mistake, it is
plagiarism, which is a grave and serious offense against the academic
process. Withdrawl of the paper is actually a fairly minor consequence,
people have lost their jobs and careers over this issue.
Thus, I would ask that you withdraw this paper, and not resubmit it in
this form to any other venue. If you believe in the work, start the
writing process over, and do not rely on copying of text from any source,
and properly attribute the origins of your ideas.
Further, I would suggest that you examine the methodology employed in
writing this paper and change it dramatically for future work, so as to
not have a repeat of this situation.
