Hello nlp'ers of UMD origin,

I do not know Ted's new students so let me first introduce myself. I
am Saif Mohammad and Ted was my advisor for my masters at UMD. Since
then I have been pursuing a PhD at Toronto and occasionally send an
update to Ted and (for good or for the bad) even less occasionally to
the group. Heres one:

I am happy to report that late this January I defended my doctorate.
Rada Mihalcea agreed to be my external examiner and it was great to
get feedback from her, in person, at Toronto. I will be submitting my
dissertation this week. While I write my acknowledgments, it seems
like the appropriate time to look west-ward and express sincere thanks
to the NLP group at UMD, especially Ted, Sid, Bridget, Amruta, and
Bano. Your continued support has been invaluable.

In other news, as of the new year, I am a Research Associate at the
Institute of Advanced Computer Studies at the University of Maryland,
College Park. I live in downtown Washington DC, which is working out
quite nicely. Bridget has bagged an internship at the prestigious
National Institute of Medicine here, which is great and I look forward
to meeting her again after Prague.

Till next time. Best,
-Saif
