I hope you don't take this as too much of a flame, but here goes.

Do you know what dns libraries are being used? Do you really think they
are any different from one distro to another? Do you think much if any
of the base support binaries are going to truly be different from one
to the other?

It is better to diagnose your problem rather than think it is the
distro's fault.

When you are having trouble with DNS, you should check first that the
/etc/resolv.conf and make sure it still matches what you think it should.

Next, verify you can actually connect to the DNS server you are trying
to get to. It isn't a good idea to route half across the network to get
the DNS responses. It slows you down. You would be better off using
a machine closer to you network wise for DNS, or possibly going ahead
and being a caching DNS server yourself.
