My wife and I are thinking about buying a GPS nav system for the car,
but we want one that can be updated with a Linux machine without too
much hassle.

TomTom[0] looks promising. We saw an ad for TomTom One 3rd ed. [1]
for about $100 tomorrow.

It seems to run Linux internally, but I don't know if that means much
for connections and updates. It also looks like it uses ogg for the
voice files. That first link has a script to manipulate them and even
create your own. Having Darth Vader give driving directions might be
worth the price of the device. :)

My question: Do any NLUGers have advice on Linux friendly GPS systems
that don't cost a fortune? If it needs to install ActiveSync or some
other Windows software, I'll have to look for another model. As far
as I know, they only really need to be connected to update maps every
other year or so. We're not interested in traffic updates or speed
traps or anything like that.

Thanks.
